9 Ball Rules

Nine Ball Rules of Play

Winner of the flip, has the choice on the first break.

The winner of the game is the person who legally pockets the nine-ball first.

Break format: loser breaks, split quarters.

Nine ball made on the break is a win. Nine ball and scratch, nine is spotted.

Any illegally pocketed nine-ball is spotted.

Failure to contact the rack, miscue or otherwise, the opponent has the option to take the break or let original breaker re-break.

Hitting the rack but failing to hit the one ball first, or hitting the one ball and not driving 4 numbered balls to a rail, gives the opponent the option of re-racking, taking the break, or taking ball in hand.

Push after break: on the first shot after the break, a push shot may be executed. A push shot can also pocket a ball. Following the push shot the next player will have the option to shoot or make the first player shoot again, at which time a legal shot must occur or it will be a foul.

Ball in hand will occur the following ways:

Scratching anytime during the game, including the break.

Not contacting the lowest ball on the table first.

Contacting the lowest ball with the cue ball and not driving a ball, or the cue ball to a rail.

Knocking a ball off the table. (ball knocked off is pocketed).

Moving a ball with hand, cue or body into the path of the cue ball.

Moving two or more balls with hand, cue or body.

Cue ball fouls only. (positioning with the shaft of a cue is allowed).

If one ball is accidentally moved by ones hand, cue or body, the opponent has the option to have the ball moved back to its original position. The opponent and shooter must agree on the location, or a tournament director will rule on the outcome. If that ball contacts another ball or balls it becomes a multiple ball foul.

Flagrant moving of any ball (s), will be loss of game.

Any time a shooter contacts the lowest ball on the table, and another ball is pocketed he retains his/her turn.

No pockets need to be indicated, including when shooting the nine-ball.

If an object ball is frozen to the rail, after the cue ball contacts the object ball, the cue ball or another ball must contact a rail or the object ball or another ball must contact another rail. A determination (whether frozen) must be made before the shot or the shot will stand.

Any un-sportsman-like conduct may result in a warning, loss of game and possible ejection from the tournament.

NO THREE FOUL RULE

The tournament director’s or designee in his absence, decisions are final.
